hell (hebrew) sheowl: 1) Sheol, underworld,
grave, hell, pit. Sheol - the Old Testament
designation for the abode of the dead. place of no
return. wicked sent there for punishment.

hell (greek) geenna: 1) Hell is the place of
the future punishment call "Gehenna" or
"Gehenna of fire". This was originally the valley
of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth
and dead animals of the city were cast out and
burned.

hell (Greek) hades: 1) name Hades or Pluto,
the god of the lower regions. In Biblical Greek it
is associated with Orcus, the infernal regions, a
dark and dismal place in the very depths of the
earth, the common receptacle of disembodied
spirits.
These are the biblical definitions of the word hell. As you can see,
hell is the place of the unsaved dead, an abode of punishment.
Many people would argue that hell is simply the grave or
nothingness, but as you can see for yourself by these definitions,
it is described as a place of punishment, not only the grave. Even if
you do believe hell is 'just the grave", you have another problem...

According to the scriptures, hell is merely a temporal place for
the unsaved dead until the great white throne judgment.
So even if
you want to believe hell is merely the grave, you have to deal with
the eternal lake of fire. In the book of Revelation chapter 20, we
read, "And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from
whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was
found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great,
stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book
was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged
out of those things which were written in the books, according to
their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and
death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them:
and they
were judged every man according to their works. And death and
hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death".

The lake of fire is the final place for all those who have rejected
Christ and his offer of forgiveness. So
hell is only a temporal
place. the lake of fire is eternal.
It is the same lake of fire that
satan will be cast into one day. "And the devil that deceived them
was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and
the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for
ever and ever". Revelation 20:10. "And whosoever was not found
written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire".
Revelation 20:11-15. Same Lake, same fire, same eternal
consequence.

Let me explain. You are a spirit. Spirits never stop ceasing to exist.
God created you in His image, "And God said, Let us make man in our
image, after our likeness" Genesis 1:26, which means when God
made you "in his image" He created your spirit to be eternal, like
his. Your spirit will continue to exist "somewhere" for all
eternity.

Conclusion: Hell is real, Heaven is real, and so is the lake of fire.
the choice is yours where you will spend eternity. Jesus said
You
must be born again
to avoid this horrific place of eternal
damnation. It is not God's will anyone should end up there. Hell
was made for satan and his angels, not for man. God made a way
for us to avoid hell and the lake of fire through Christ's sacrifice
for our sins upon the cross. "He that believeth on the Son hath
everlasting life: and he that believeth not on the Son shall not see
life; but the wrath of God abideth on him". John 3:36. Contrary to
popular belief,
the lake of fire isn't a "threat", it is a warning. God
doesn't need to "Threaten" anyone for He isn't threatened "by"
anyone, but if the idea of hell and the lake of fire doesn't concern
you, you aren't paying close enough attention. I must warn you,
after you die, there are no second chances. "It is appointed unto
man
once to die, but after this, the judgment". Hebrews 9:27.
